Kyustendil is a town famous from the ancient times. It is located amphitheatrically at the foot of the green Osogovo mountain (540 m altitude). There are many green parks and above the town is situated the hill "Hisarluka" - ancient roman fortress, nowadays wide and beautiful park for a rest and entertainment among the nature.
Kyustendil is one of the ancient bulgarian towns. In the V - IV century BC the Thracians found a settlement attracted by the medicinal springs. In I century AD the Romans transform the town in important fortress, trade artery and famous SPA center, called Pautalia. In the Middle Ages, during the time of First Bulgarian State, the town is famous with the Slavic name Velbuzhd and it is a center of wide province. In the end of XIV century the town is under the reign of the Ottoman empire and its new name is Kyustendil (means The land of Konstantin - the name of its lord Konstantin Dragash).
The town park "Hisarluka" is well known in Bulgaria. Attention also should be paid to Roman fortress in "Hisarluka", Church "St. George" (X-XI century) with its unique frescoes in district Kolusha,, Pirgovata kula (The Pirgov's Tower - XIV - XV century), orthodoxal churches “Sveta Bogorodica” ( means The Virgin Mary - 1816), “Sveti Dimitar”, "Sveti Mina", Kilijnoto uchilishte (the cell school - 1849), the House-Museum "Ilio Voivoda", monument and house-museum of Dimitar Peshev (The Saver of Bulgarian Jews), picture gallery "Vladimir Dimitrov - Majstora", etc.

The hot and medicinal springs in Kyustendil are suitable for general prophylaxis, for body strengthening and for treatment of:

- neuralgia, neuritis, lumbago, etc.;
